Packing Lists and Travel Tings

June 17, 2022 Charlene Lobo Soriano

This you? Not me.

ARLOs Essential Travel Packing List

SO as the world opens up, the question came up in the chat about hints for travel and packing. I did a stream about it, took some notes, and opened up a google doc for folks to ask questions. Here is the doc in its entirety, including the links for all the things I talked about. Hope this helps and hope you have safe travels.

Getting Ready:

Considerations:

  • Destination

    • Where are you going

      • What’s appropriate to wear there

      • How will you be expected to present yourself

  • Agenda/Purpose

    • What are your tasks while you are there

      • Business

      • Pleasure

    • What is on your to-do list

  • Weather

    • Consult weather forecasts

  • Wash clothes when traveling

    • Can you do laundry? (see below)

  • Budget

    • Do you really need to buy new clothes for your trip?

    • What can you afford to leave behind if need be?

Packing Up:

Carry ons vs checked bags

  • Carry on:

    • Things you most need with you and require access: goes under your seat

    • Things you need but don’t need access to/jacket: goes into overhead

  • Checked:

    • Things you are NOT allowed to bring on board

    • Excess clothes, etc.

    • If you are given the option with a carry on to check it, please do if you have the time to spend waiting (it’s not that long, calm down)

What is the best method -- rolling clothes, folding them, or other?

  • Both BUT USE STUFF BAGS: Ikea, REI

How to maximize space while packing heels

  • Use the shoes and the spaces to maximize space

  • Tuck things into shoes and in the spaces between shoes

How to reduce the number of shoes

  • Plan for formal (heels or dress shoes)

  • Casual shoes for walking around (sneakers)

  • Slides or sandals that can do double duty in other instances

  • Wear your heaviest shoes onto the plane

  • Also, you seriously don’t need hella shoes

Maximize outfits for long trips

  • Plan out your days first

  • Determine what can be repeated (keep in mind what can be washed)

  • Remember to layer things if possible

  • Wash when you can

Minimalist makeup & toiletries

  • Toiletry Bag

  • Lipstick

    • Always have a lip protectant/chapstick basic/bougie

  • Eyeliner

    • Haus Laboratories

  • Mascara

    • Heroine Make Mascara & Speedy Remover

  • Powders

    • Thrive Cosmetics Bronzer

    • Sephora Bronzer/Highlighter

  • Shampoo/Conditioner

    • Containers

      • Muji

    • Solid Shampoo

    • Solid Conditioner

Things i always pack in my carry on-

  • Eye mask

  • Water bottle: Hydroflask, Water “anti-bottle”, Fellow Carter Everywhere Mug

  • Headphones: Airpods Pro, Sennheiser 450 BT

  • Kindle/ipad

  • Phone: netflix with movies already downloaded

    • Download everything the days before your trip; DO NOT try to download at the airport

  • Food/snacks - avoid messy stuff, no peanuts

    • Parmesan Goldfish

    • Haribo Gold Gummy Bears

    • Trader Joe’s Almond, Cranberry, and Cashew Trail Mix please do not buy from this link - buy it straight at Trader Joe’s

  • Blanket: This is the shawl style I own multiples of. I do not have this color (yet), but I swear by them.

  • Foot swing

  • Neck pillow

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Backpack: Fjallraven Kanken, North Face Isabella

  • Cable bag

  • Stuff bags: Ziploc Bags (I use Quart, Sandwich, Snack, and Gallon)

  • Portable USB Battery pack/power brick (anker)

  • Sunscreen: Supergoop Daily Dose Vitamin C + SPF, Biore UV Aqua Rich

  • Packable bag: Chico bag, Outlander Packable Backpack, Bago Packable Dufflebag

  • Fanny pack! Cotopaxi BATAAN DEL DÍA (every day), Alpaka Elements tech case (more fancy)

  • Baby wipes

  • Clorox wipes

  • Purse organizer: perfect for those of us who like totes

Dress for flight:

  • Elastic waistband pants

    • Uniqlo sweatpants

  • Socks

    • McDonalds socks (yes I own the fries/big mac socks)

  • Hoodies

    • ARLO I am the Oracle hoodie

  • Braless

    • Consider almost braless feels:

      • Skim Fits Everybody Crossover Bra

      • Uniqlo AIRism Camisole Bra Top

The laundry question:

  • I know it’s weird to wash clothes on vacation but why not? You could easily wash your things in the sink, if anything, to get the funk out. You don’t need it to be sparkling, you just need to get the day off your clothes.

My carry on suitcase: Amazon Basics 21 inch carry on

My checked suitcase: Hideo Wakamatsu Tarpaulin 25” Suitcase

Notes for the guys:

Same rules apply for what to pack:

  • Collared shirt that could double for meetings/formal eating out

  • Dark colored jeans could be formal and informal

  • Consider the weather - don’t bring jeans to humid places; consider lighter linens or shorts (not athletic ones)

  • Bring your best hoodie if you need to wear it out for casual and somewhat formal meet ups

Don’t be ashy

  • GFE does not like ashy bois. Please pack a travel size of lotion.
